Review of Winner of WGU contest

Okay so I had the oppurtunity to go to the premiere thanks to the VIP PREMIERE CONTEST that I won last week. I once again thank everyone involved in that contest and making everything happen!
The trip was amazing, and the accomodations by everyone was fantastic. The producers and everyone involved in the movie like James Hoke, Anthony Miranda, Jonathan Glatzer and of course Richard Becker were all so down to earth and amazing people. I'll cut to the chase and get to the premeire and the movie but will give more details later.
The movie was amazing. It was really deep and the storyline was amazing. Its not the typical teenage comedy that one would expect to see like "Mean Girls" or "John Tucker Must Die" but it was one that is much more deep and retained comedy while keeping a serious and strong story line.
What Goes Up revolves around Steve Coogan's (a journalist) perspective of a bunch of students who are suffering the loss of their teacher. It should be noted that all these students come from completely different cliques in high school, but it was that one teacher that brought them all together, and brought them to appreciate each other. While observing and trying to create a story for his report, his connections with the characters increase and become more personal. I'm not going to ruin anything, but just this should gather everyone's interest for the film.
The casting of the movie was amazing, and each character brought something unique and amazing to the film. The film has a really 80's vibe to it, and everything is so well put together to create such a solid film. The soundtrack, the editing, the production all complete the film to something, that I hope becomes a hit.
I know all of you are probably wondering how Hilary's acting was...Without any bias to it being a movie with Hilary Duff in it, I personally loved her role in the film. Her character, Lucy, in the film is definitely one that needs to be in it to keep the film's plot going and its just really cool to see Hilary in a high school comedy that isn't her normal role (A Cinderella Story, Raise Your Voice).
This movie definitely requires attention or else you will get lost and confused, which could be a good thing or a bad thing. However, since I got into it from the beginning, I was restless to see what would happen.
I definitely recommend this film to each and everyone of you and really encourage people to go see it in theaters (if there is one close to you). Not only because the film is a great watch, but also because this movie needs all the support from us fans that it can get. If it proves to be a success this weekend, it will expand and hopefully open in more theaters!
I give the movie a 9/10. If you guys have any questions regarding the movie, or anything you want to know about the premiere, feel free to PM me.

About Hilary on Ashley's OK! Weekly Interview

'What Goes Up' could finally land Hilary Duff a worst actress Razzie Award

After losing three consecutive worst actress bids at the Razzie Awards, it looks like Hilary Duff has a real shot at taking home that honor this year for her performance in "What Goes Up." This coming-of-age comedy set against the backdrop of the Challenger space shuttle tragedy opened today to some of the worst reviews of the year so far.
Hilary Duff What Goes Up Razzie Awards The film by first-time writer-director Jonathan Glatzer earned a mere 17 at Metacritic, which the aggregating site characterizes as representing critical "dislike or disgust." However, that score stands far above the absolute zero that "What Goes Up" rated with the critics surveyed by Rotten Tomatoes.
For Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune, "Nothing in this movie is properly focused; everyone keeps talking about a character whom we never meet and does not matter; the tone keeps slipping around from indolent satire to thudding sincerity, and the Challenger shuttle disaster backdrop is queasy-making at best, offensive at worst." Glenn Whipp of the Los Angeles Times thought, "Glatzer aims to wring laughter out of this desperation but succeeds only in producing a series of contrived characters and situations that make 'The Breakfast Club' look like an unfiltered documentary." And as Vadim Rizov said in his review for the Village Voice, "This is rock bottom: I've seen a lot of terrible movies in the line of duty, but 'What Goes Up' might be the only genuinely unreleasable one."
Hilary Duff is a four-time also-ran at the Razzie Awards, those cheeky kudos that laud the worst in moviemaking. In 2004, she lost her first worst actress bid for "A Cinderella Story" to "Catwoman" star Halle Berry, who shocked the crowd when she showed up to accept the honor. The following year, Duff was edged out for her work in "Cheaper by the Dozen 2" by "Dirty Boy" leading lady Jenny McCarthy. In 2006, she and her equally talented sister Haylie Duff made the misfire "Material Girls." However, they lost the worst actress award to Sharon Stone ("Basic Instinct 2") and the worst couple prize to brothers Shawn and Marlon Wayans along with Kerry Washington ("Little Man").
Don't fret if you can't get to the movies to see this masterpiece. The DVD version of "What Goes Up" is already scheduled for release June 18.

“What Goes Up” Reviews

Hilary Duff’s movie What Goes Up hit select theaters yesterday and I was lucky to be able to review the film as well!
What Goes Up follows a “morally challenged” NY reporter, Campbell Babbitt (Steve Coogan), who returns to a small New Hampshire town to cover his hometown news surrounding the first civilian and teacher in space in the 1980s, giving us a glimpse into how heroes are made in this world. While there, he learns a few life lessons from a group of disaffected students (Hilary Duff, Josh Peck, Olivia Thirlby) who are mourning the loss of their teacher (and Babbitt’s friend), who committed suicide. Hilary Duff plays a “narcissistic seductress” named Lucy.
The movie itself is based around a story of heroism, a true one about the Challenger launch, but the real story is how regular people come to be heroes themselves… intentionally or not. Sometimes this came through much better than at other times. I actually thought that sometimes including the Challenger launch made the tie to heroism more literal than it needed to be, but it was the foundation for what brought all these characters together.
My favorite performances in the film came from Olivia Thirlby and Josh Peck, whose characters struggled with complex emotions and situations. Their stories were the most moving, and most disturbing, I think. I thought Hilary Duff did a great job at portraying Lucy, though I think some of the other sub-plots kind of distracted from Lucy’s storyline and the pain she’s trying to get across. My favorite scene of Hilary’s was one where she was with co-star Olivia Thirlby during a particularly emotional segment - to me, this was a lot more moving than Lucy’s infatuation with her teacher or the reporter.
Overall, I thought the movie was pretty good. I think it would have been better without so many side-plots - although I wouldn’t necessarily remove any characters, I wouldn’t give them all the same focus either. I thought the characters portrayed by Molly Shannon and some of the other classmates (especially the two weird girls and the shoplifting girl) could have been minimized. I think this may have helped to put more focus on the really strong plotlines of the other characters.
I think you’ll enjoy the movie - Hilary Duff has shown a whole new side to us in this film, which is always her goal as an actress. I hope you get a chance to see it in the theater - but if not, I’ll let you know when it officially comes out on DVD!
